Toronto, Canada. August 14th 2001 - At Siggraph 2001, Okino Computer Graphics, Inc. announced today that it has licensed the innovative and cutting edge "Web Integration Server" XML based Internet searching and asset link management technology from Web2xml Inc. By fully integrating this complementary and additive technology to Okino's popular PolyTrans 3D Scene Translation System and NuGraf Rendering System products, Okino users will be able to quickly scour the entire Internet for specific 3D model or 2D texture image assets at the push of a button. Whereby looking for a 3D model or 2D texture image once meant inserting and scanning numerous CDROMs with mixed results, Okino's modern alternative brings a wide selection of assets to the user's finger tips within seconds or minutes, and with built-in support for the most pervasive file formats currently on the market.
Once the asset has been selected and downloaded, users of Okino's PolyTrans and NuGraf software will be able to perform interactive scene manipulation and staging, material application and editing (NuGraf), rendering, and/or re-export of the data to every major 3D file format for destination to any major 3D rendering or animation package. The list of currently supported formats can be seen here http://www.okino.com/conv/filefrmt.htm.
"Okino has remained at the forefront of innovative, applied R&D for 3D data translation, rendering and animation software throughout our decade of existence," said Robert Lansdale, President of Okino Computer Graphics, Inc. "With the spiraling growth and popularity of the Internet it was only natural that we move into a WEB initiative as of January 2000, an initiative to closely bind the WEB and its vast resources of 3D model and image assets with our popular PolyTrans and NuGraf software. By licensing the technically excellent Web Integration Server XML technology from Web2XML we will now be able to provide our users with intelligent searching of the entire WEB for specific classes or sub-sets of 3D models and 2D texture images, all within the PolyTrans and NuGraf user interfaces, all multi-threaded and with easy downloading and final viewing of the assets. One of Okino's well known primary focuses has always been to provide the most technically complete and well supported 3D data translators in the industry; this marriage of mature technology with the vast asset resources of the Internet adds an entirely new dimension to the concept of the "File/Open" menu command in any 3D program: it now opens to the Internet!"
"We believe that the synergistic addition of the Web2XML Web Integration Server technology will enable Okino to provide encompassing solutions for Okino's customers," said Paul Tan, President and CEO of Web2XML. "We are pleased with this strategic partnership relationship, and the possibilities for the development of new and exciting products in the 3D modeling and imaging world".
"Okino Computer Graphics has always been known to seize on opportunities and release innovative new features for its PolyTrans and NuGraf software that solve more and more user related work issues," said Mark Still, V.P. Business Development 3D ModelWorks. "They have done this again with their new WEB initiative which clearly will open up the 3D model asset market to many 3D software applications. In addition to being the only 3D content site allowing real-time, interactive viewing of 3D content online, we've modified the 3D ModelWorks WEB searching interface to allow Okino's new search engine to easily access our vast number of 3D models and textures. Users can come to the 3D ModelWorks WEB site for very detailed searching or perform generic searching for 3D models and textures within Okino's software products. We look forward to working with Okino and their customer user base".
PolyTrans & NuGraf, An Overview
Okino's stand-alone "PolyTrans CAD/Scene/NURBS/Animation Translator" for Microsoft Windows and SGI IRIX has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed and respected 3D geometry and scene translators. Unlike most translation programs which only convert basic polygon geometry, hierarchy and some shading information, PolyTrans is unique in its ability to convert every aspect of a 3D model file; this includes all geometry (meshed polygons with recursive holes, trimmed NURBS and bicubic patches, and quadrics), object hierarchy, pivot points, smoothing data (vertex normals), (u,v) texture coordinates, bump mapping information (tangent vectors), lights, cameras, all texture projection methods and animation (for specific formats). Okino's NuGraf is the elder sibling of PolyTrans that includes, in addition to everything in PolyTrans, high-end scanline and multi-threaded ray tracing, material editing, bitmap and procedural texture mapping, texture projection methods, extended user interface and font editing. NuGraf received the "IEEE Technical Excellence Award" from IEEE CG&A Magazine and the "Golden Pixie" award.
Notable users of Okino's software include Acuris, ATI, Disney, DPS, Dreamworks, EDS, HP, Hughes, Infobyte, IBM, Intel, JPL, LEGO, MIT Media Labs, PIXAR, REM Infographica, Westwood Studios and major 3D game development companies such as Acclaim Entertainment, Broderbund, Electronic Arts, Interplay, Lucas Arts, Microprose, Namco, Sierra Online, Stage 22, Virgin Interactive, Virtual World Entertainment, Williams/Bally/Midway and thousands more (an interesting list of notable users can be viewed at http://www.okino.com/conv/users.htm).
Product Availability
Okino will announce through its press releases and mailings to customers when this new Web2XML technology has become a fundamental component of the PolyTrans and NuGraf software. It will be available on the Intel PC platform.
