Simulating metallic gold in computer graphics is a daunting task since gold is
not just a color but rather a combination of a bronze color and a tinted
reflection of the surroundings. This gold teapot is an attempt to recreate the
gold objects seen in the classic Benson & Hedges commercials produced by
Robert Abel Productions in the mid-eighties. The gold effect is achieved by
applying a spherical environment map of a gold fireplace to the teapot and
mixing it in with a gold base surface color. Also of particular interest is the
high-quality anti-aliasing of the spherical environment texture using MIPmap
filtering; without the filtering the reflected image of the fireplace would look
aliased and distorted.
