Supported 3D Points & 3D Point Cloud Import/Export File Formats

I want to learn how to convert

To learn of the 'Best Practices' to import from our most popular 3D CAD file formats, click here.

A well developed but little known aspect of Okino software is its end-to-end support for the conversion of 3D point files and point cloud data files. This sub-pipeline allows 3D point file data to be imported then exported into a succinct set of industry standard point file formats as well as into a series of common and generic 3D file formats (as outlined in the tables below).

Arrow 3D Points & 3D Point Cloud Import File Converters

The following 3D Points & 3D Point Cloud import file formats are supported by Okino's 3D points file importer wizard.

 Import File Format ExtOverview
ASCII digitizer point file ASC One set of points per line, each number delimited by spaces.
Comma separated data (import from spreadsheets) CSV .csv files are easily imported from most spreadsheet programs, including Microsoft Excel. It is the best and simplest method to get columnar data exported from a spreadsheet.
N-PTS 3D point file   NPTS.TXT   Ignores the first line, then parses remaining lines (delimited by spaces)
PTS 3D point file PTS PTS is a very common 3D points file format (the first 2 lines will be ignored)
ShapeGrabber 3PI '3PI' Native file format for ShapeGrabber 3D point scanning software.
Space delimited data PRN One set of points per line, each number delimited by spaces.
Tab delimited data TXT One set of points per line, each number delimited by tabs.
XYZ 3D point per line XYZ One set of XYZ points per line, arbitrary number delimiters.
XYZ 3D point and RGB color per line XYZRGB One set of XYZ points and RGB colors per line, arbitrary number delimiters.

Arrow Other Okino Import Converter Modules Which Support 3D Point Clouds

The following table lists the subset of Okino's 3D import converter modules which support the import of 3D points and 3D point clouds.
 Import File Format ExtOverview
DWF (Autodesk, AVEVA & Others) DWF Lone 3D points will be collected into one 3D pointset object labelled 'Marker Points'.
ESRI ShapeFiles SHP Lone 3D points will be collected into one 3D pointset object.
HOOPS HSF (Similar to DWF-3D) HSF Same as for DWF.
IGES Neutral CAD Format   IGES   'Independent' points will be collected into one 3D pointset object. Okino v5.3 importer only.
MicroStation, Intergraph DGN Zero-length lines will be collected into one 3D pointset object.
OpenNURBS & Rhino-3D 3DM Import of '3D point set' objects.
PLY (Stanford) PLY Imports RGB point colors as well.
Universal 3D (for 3D PDF files) U3D Import of '3D point set' objects.
Wavefront OBJ+MTL OBJ Lines which begin with 'p' in the OBJ file.

Arrow 3D Points & 3D Point Cloud Export File Converters

The following 3D Points & 3D Point Cloud export file formats are supported by Okino's 3D points file exporter module.

 Export File Format ExtOverview
Comma separated data CSV .csv files are easily imported into most spreadsheet programs, including Microsoft Excel. It is the simplest method to get columnar data into a spreadsheet.
Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet XLS Microsoft Excel must be installed locally for this export option to function properly.
PTS 3D point file PTS PTS is a common 3D points file format.
ShapeGrabber 3PI file   '3PI'   Native file format for ShapeGrabber 3D point scanning software.
Space delimited data PRN One set of points per line, each number delimited by spaces.
Tab delimited data TXT One set of points per line, each number delimited by tabs.

Arrow Other Okino 3D Export Converter Modules Which Support 3D Point Clouds

The following table lists the subset of Okino's 3D export converter modules which support the export of 3D points and 3D point clouds.

NOTE: Each of the 3D exporter modules listed in the following table will only output the 3D point lists from a 'Point Set' primitive and not from polygon meshes, NURBS, curves or polylines data. In other words, you need to import a 3D point set dataset only (and not 3D polygon meshes, NURBS surfaces or polyline data) before exporting into one of the 3D exporter file formats listed in the table below or one of the dedicated 3D point file export file formats. For example, if the current 3D scene contains a sphere then exporting to any of the file formats listed in the following table will output a 3D sphere (as a polygon mesh) and not a simple 3D point file. On the flip side, the dedicated 3D point file exporters can output 3D point sets from any source geometry, be they point sets, meshes, polylines or NURBS - refer to the Output points from these primitives option defined on the exporter's documentation page.

 Export File Format ExtOverview
AutoCAD Compatible  DXF, DWG  Output as individual 'POINT' primitives and optional #62 color number.
DWF (Autodesk, AVEVA & Others) DWF Output as individual 'TK_Point' marker primitives (no color).
HOOPS HSF (Similar to DWF-3D) HSF Same as for DWF.
IGES Neutral CAD Format IGES Output as entities #106 or #116, the latter with RGB color.
'JT Open' PLM/CAD Format JT Output as a 'JtkPointSet' primitive with optional RGB colors.
MicroStation, Intergraph DGN Output as a 'Point Set' with optional RGB colors.
Okino Scene 'Text Dumper' TXT Output as a text readable file.
OpenNURBS & Rhino-3D 3DM Output as an OpenNURBS 'Point Cloud'
Universal 3D (for 3D PDF files) U3D Output as a 'AuthorPointSet' descriptor with optional RGB colors.
 VRML2, VRML2 Classic & X3D WRL, X3D Output as the 'PointSet' primitive.
Wavefront OBJ+MTL OBJ Output as a 'p' point primitive.
