This artsy looking image demonstrates 3D procedural texture mapping (the checkerboard background) and transparency mapping. The holes are created by modulating the sphere's surface transparency with a black and white 2D texture image which contains white circles. In addition, the Okino Cola 2D texture image is used to further modulate the surface's transparency.
